Design Area #1
Entry and Grand Hall

Designers:
Prairiebrooke Arts & Galleries
Jill Hermes and Brooke Morehead

7900 Santa Fe Drive, Overland Park, Kan.  l  913.341.0333
4731 W. 119th St., Overland Park, Kan.  l  913.897.7333

This entry room is about excitement. Original fine art makes a statement and is incredibly influential to a person’s mood. Imagine the smiles and conversations that will instantly ignite as guests are enveloped by bright, bold and cheerful colors. Rich reds, sunny yellows and electric blues as well as textures, gestural brush strokes and shiny finishes make a dramatic impression that exudes warmth and hominess. This piece is a combination of mini canvases by Jeremy Bortz that can be mixed and matched for any interior. When it is all about color, there is no wrong answer. Of course, the look and feel of this fabulous artwork would not be complete without custom-designed and handcrafted framing. The playful combination of different art styles energizes the entry room and makes it such a joy to walk through the front door.

Design Area #2
Powder Room

Designer:
Modern Haven Interiors LLC
Shawna Hampton

20622 W. 126th Terrace, Olathe, Kan.  l  913.912.3395

Contemporary elegance meets vintage whimsy in this small powder room, a perfect combination to impress guests yet remain true to this gorgeous home’s traditional character.

A classic basket weave tile pattern in white and gray marble is bordered by blue limestone and a decorative glass and ceramic for emphasis and sparkle. This sets the stage for the vintage lines of a custom-built, painted and stained vanity with a white marble mosaic tile top, crisp white vessel sink and wrought iron fixture. The sleek oval pattern of the creamy gray wallpaper is reflected in the doors of a spunky repurposed chest painted navy blue and accented with stripes in fresh lime. Navy fabric in a fun paisley-inspired floral pattern dresses the room’s small window.

Transitional Coastal Family Room

Designers:
Traditions Furniture
Lynda Kincaid, Missy Dean, Kathy Carter, Julie Walker and Carol Walker

7400 W. 79th St., Overland Park, Kan.  l  913.649.2429

The stone walls and many multi-paned windows of the family room make it a special retreat, a room where sunshine and nature beckon just beyond the windows. A coastal theme developed to showcase a collection of Stickley Furniture called The Coronado Collection. The simplicity of its design; solid, oak-planked tops; warm finishes; and hand-forged iron bases combined with unique textural fabrics, finishes and accessories complement the monochromatic theme.

Design Area #4
Formal Living Room

Designers:
Ethan Allen
Lori Rodopoulos, Yolanda Witt, Denice Cline and Christopher Huelshorst

7090 W. 134th St., Overland Park, Kan.  l  913.402.9700

The living room channels a sense of global adventure reminiscent of the old but fused with a modern vibe. Texture, detailed woods, lush fabrics and natural fibers all play a role in the telling of this eclectic story.

Rich silk plaids and woven damasks clamor for attention. The Ethan Allen signature sofa has traditional roots with its carved woodwork, indicative of 19th-century artisans. The accompanying chairs echo the traditional, with fluting and scroll arms but then “walk to the modern side” with a sharp linear back. Case good pieces include a curvy, gesso-finished chest and cocktail table that harkens back to the Ming Dynasty. All reveal a sumptuous blend of appointments that illustrate the eclectic, global lifestyle.

Design Area #5
Conservatory

Designers:
Edgevale Interiors
Becky Mosby and Danna Jardon

6116 Johnson Drive, Mission, Kan.  l  913.403.8136

The conservatory is a happy room made for soaking up healing rays of sunlight streaming in from surrounding windows. Goldenrod walls contrast with off-white trim. Coral cheetah fabric on the ceiling provides a fun backdrop for an oversized, lighted fan.

A cozy settee in oatmeal linen is enlivened with bright pillows in gold, coral and fuchsia. A floral, skirted ottoman is trimmed in cheetah fabric. A luscious coral leather wingchair flanks the settee and is joined by a metal and mirror-top table.

Opposite the settee stands an elegant mirrored chest with a lamp. Hot pink damask peeks out from deep pleats and covered buttons on a darling lounge chair in vibrant flame stitch. A ceramic garden stool provides a place for refreshments.

A rug softens the terra-cotta brick floor, while live plants add to the bright, cheery atmosphere.

Designer:
The Design Gallery at Nebraska Furniture Mart
Wes Hodge

1601 Village West Parkway, Kansas City, Kan.  l  913.288.6354  |  design.gallerykc@nfm.com

In the formal dining room, elements of rural France mix with rustic modern decor to create a collected look that exudes personality. Gray and gold metallic walls are a striking backdrop for a serene color palette of ivory and gold. Classic draperies and Roman shades soften the space while a gold-leafed mirror and equally dramatic lighting add an opulent touch. The centerpiece of the room is a Country French pedestal table with a distressed herringbone inlay top. Bamboo host chairs add an unexpected touch of island flair to the cozy space, and a classic floral print covers skirted Parsons chairs. A hand-painted credenza and a pair of mirrored consoles provide the dining room with plenty of serving and storage space. An elegant hand-knotted rug echoes the color palette and unifies this inviting space for guests to take center stage.

Design Area #7
Den for Generations and Genders

Designer:
Alan Karlin Design
Alan Karlin and Elizabeth Ezra

4510 State Line Road, Kansas City, Kan.  l  913.384.3558

This cozy den is meant to be a quiet area for any member of the family to relax at any time of the day. Refreshed woodwork and soft white walls keep the room feeling light and inviting. Lounging will take place on comfortable upholstery in luxurious shades of taupe. Soft gold, introduced by the stylish patchwork rug, works as the warm accent color throughout the room.

The light and views to the outside are wonderful at many times of the day, but woven grass shades afford privacy and light control when desired. Graphic drapery side panels add some pattern to the room and pull the colors together. Artwork, accent furniture, pillows and lighting finish off the room to make it fit the classic style of the house yet feel up-to-date.

Design Area #8
Grand Staircase and Landing to 2nd Floor

Designers:
Edgevale Interiors
Becky Mosby

6116 Johnson Drive, Mission, Kan.  l  913.403.8136

The second-floor landing is a cozy nook where the family loves to curl up and read. Cushions and multiple throw pillows in a combination of rich chocolate chenille, mink gray velvet, and cinnamon-textured and pattered fabrics create a luxurious place to lounge. The face of the window seat is skirted to achieve a more finished appearance.

The window treatment consists of a single valance, spanning the length of the windows, constructed in a beautiful cinnamon and milk chocolate ikat with mink velvet inverted pleats. The soft yet angular lines of the valance frame the view dramatically. The deep colors and rich textures invoke an atmosphere of tranquility and repose.

A combination of past and present, salvaged tile reflecting the home being on the National Registry of Historic Places mixes with an updated, eco-friendly wall covering brewed up by the Kenneth James Collection. The contemporary wall covering harmonizes with hobbled Roman shades, providing versatility, energy-efficiency and light modification. A special critical attraction is the mirror image and TV that is ready when you want it but hidden when you don’t.

Glamour and storage come together with a mirror-accented armoire that complements a beautiful vanity. Spa colors of tan, cream and soft taupe are meant to relax, recharge and refuel.

Seductive luxury and elegance are creatively present with the combination of classic traditional furniture and contemporary coverings, while technology is more discrete with a TV behind the mirror. Feng Shui elements are present, from the one o’clock positioning of the bedroom to the placement of the bed and accessories. Metal accessories, wood furniture and colors of soft yellow and neutral complete the earth and fire elements. The hand-knotted rug anchors the room for additional harmony and visual balance. Elegant Asian, Neo-classic and Louis XV furnishings make dreams come true.

The closet reflects a combination of romanticism, exuberance and sense of sophistication while appreciating the historical crown molding. The existing shelves are enhanced with a soft cream, while the walls are a soft lilac that complements the intermixing of yellow used in this space and the bedroom. Baskets above help separate a collection of accessories while providing extra space for storage. Combining these different elements breaks this space away from the original definition, closet, into its own personal domain.

A retreat that brings the outside in starts with a bronze tree table by Tom Corbin and textured grasscloth that surrounds and illuminates the room. An architectural ceiling dazzles, as does a handmade Craftsman inlaid table by Daryl Nickel and a hand-knotted rug. Alfred Shaheen’s sun weave fabric adds life to this habitat on wing chairs.

This multipurpose room can be enjoyed by the occasional guest or child in the comfort sleeper. Roman blinds control the light for entertaining and relaxation.

5041 W. 119th St., Overland Park, Kan.  l  913.499.8800

Call it princess-inspired classic design with a twist. A show-stopping four-poster bed anchors this cozy castle. Walls awash in dreamy blue with crisp white trim set the stage for a modern fairytale. A fanciful custom canopy created using Pine Cone Hill drapery panels and vintage curtain rods is suspended above the bed. Beautifully coordinated accents include a hand-carved floor mirror, lamp and nightstand.

Every princess needs a place to primp, and this room boasts a cozy closet alcove complete with a vanity, custom seating and accent lighting for picture-perfect style. Bedding, window coverings and area rugs in a cheery palette of aqua, lime, lavender and, of course, princess pink complete this chapter in our stylish storybook. Sweet dreams.

17315 Antioch Road, Stilwell, Kan.  l  913.897.7340

The beautiful warm tones in deep reds and golds accent the second-floor landing with custom portrait art designed and created in the fall settings of The Kelly Gallery Gardens. The portrait, created for Lisa Moseley, displayed over the French provincial chest was photographed in the warm evening light to create a specific artistic look. In it a beloved horse adds a unique, personal touch, creating a custom piece to hang in the family’s formal dining room. A traditional, elegant sconce complements a whimsical, contemporary chandelier, keeping the flow of the eclectic ambiance that is seen throughout the home.

9801 Commerce Parkway, Lenexa, Kan.  l  913.541.9700

Keeping with the grandeur of this stately home, this bathroom is given a modern twist to a classic design. The mini-hexagon floor with hints of gray set the tempo in this update. To add visual texture to the walls, a linear fabric porcelain tile is accented with a white-and-silver mosaic then crowned with crisp white molding. An antique chest converted into a vanity is topped with Carrera marble and adorned with a vessel sink and new fixtures. Shower walls are lined in Light Smoke ceramic tile to complement the fabric wall tile and mosaic. The white-and-silver mosaics continue inside the niches and glisten like gems. Pink, green and yellow paisley Roman shades complement soft pink walls, while sconces flanking the vintage medicine cabinet illuminate the space.

Entry Hall, Guest Bedroom and Veranda

Designers:
B+I Design
Patrick Kappelmann and Brian Morley

520 W. Pennway, Kansas City, Mo.  l  816.561.5599

A tranquil palette and appropriate amenities perfect this overnight retreat. Oyster gray, cornmeal and buttercup yellow are defined with a historical accent of ebonized black in the new crown molding and existing wood mantel. Walls of hand-painted stripes with faux stitching detail and turn-of-the-century antiques allow the room to echo the architecture and time period of this Henry Hoit-designed home. Textural fabrics in a subdued color palette give depth to the decor.

Continental antiques and garden references are key elements in creating the feeling of a restful retreat. Antique silhouettes and pressed botanicals help cement a sense of hand-craftsmanship and love of nature. The seclusion of a private garden is brought to life with manicured terrace plantings.

A plush wool carpet in a parterre design gives a nod to the present, but the effect of timeless quality and elegance is maintained.

His unique pen-and-ink artwork is designed with special words hidden in intricate designs. Each original artwork features a soft, warm bronze pastel and a touch of colored foil. Hidden in the tiger is the word “courage.” In the tree artwork, guests will find “save the trees,” among other hidden images. Why limit an art collection to the first floor? Given the opportunity, hallways can be an impactful and beautiful gallery space. Setting the tone for the third floor, the large color-rich canvas exudes energy and sophistication. The barn adds a familiar Midwest tone to an unexpected abstract landscape. Additional pieces from the Artsy collection complement and unify the design area.

The masculine vibe of this space comes together with a mix of metals, textured surfaces, cool blues and an angled ceiling sleekly defined with metallic 3D wallpaper. A young man can surround himself with things he is passionate about on casually arranged built-in shelves and simply hang out in a relaxing seat near the dormered window to play video games or watch TV. Sleeping is as comfortable as slipping on a favorite pair of jeans, as denim pockets are featured on a custom headboard that provides ample storage for electronic devices, wallets, watches, etc. A side bench is great as a catchall, and the nightstand and chest are finished in analogous blue tones with fabric-covered drawer fronts and reflective hardware. Take the trek up to this high-tech tree house and be inspired to repurpose items in your own home.

The lady of the house fell in love with the whimsical leaping-frog fabric that adorns her office chair. This cheery pink-and-green palette became the theme song for her self-described “girlie-girl” office and studio. Finding a place of honor is her beloved grandmother’s settee, reupholstered and now bold, bright and comfy. The recycled-glass desk, positioned in front of the double window, allows for season-gazing and bird-watching. Children’s frog drawings and colorful paintings add additional happiness to this already upbeat workspace. The walls and ceiling are embellished with a metallic pearl shimmer because every lady knows that pearls complete her fashion ensemble.

This room is dedicated to the family’s love of playing cards. The space seats four around the dining table, with two additional seats flanking the window, which is dressed with a flat Roman shade in an ikat fabric of blues, gold and cream. A dresser provides additional storage, above which hangs original art flanked by sconces. A swing-arm chandelier helps define the dining area.

Because the attic creates such interesting lines in the ceiling, walls painted ivory make it feel less busy. An Egyptian motif painted on the floor in navy and white makes the room look continuous and creates a nice flow.

The former closet, converted into a mini kitchen, features a  mirror on the back wall, shelving and an undercounter refrigerator.

This happy, serene kitchen blends the past with the present. Two sets of 100-year-old cabinets have been updated with fresh blue paint. The jonquil yellow walls and ceiling surround the room in sunshine, even on a gloomy day. Reminiscent of an old European villa, the kitchen has Country French elements, doors to the garden and a purposeful lack of sleekness shown in today’s home decor magazines. Two existing dishwashers, two ovens and a center island provide modern conveniences for the chef amidst an aura of Old World charm.

This porch, smaller than most closets, offers a friendly and welcoming space that serves multiple purposes, whether it’s recycling or grabbing the dog’s leash for a walk. Cork flooring is easy to maintain and looks warm and earthy. A bench is covered with an easy-to-wipe basket weave and perky, striped skirt, which does double duty hiding boots or dog toys. A handsome, custom worktable fabricated from reclaimed walnut wood has space for recyclables and a stool underneath. The warm, blonde color of the walls, piped in rope, and the addition of art and flowers beckons happy spirits, while a stylish petite orb chandelier reflects the pale blue color of the ceiling. A wonderful antique candelabra has been repurposed as a place to hang hats, leashes, scarves, etc.

Assortments of plants in containers transform hard surfaces into living landscapes, from the deck just outside the conservatory to the garage entry. The Container Oasis uses multiple sizes and shapes of gray concrete and hypertufa hardscape as well as garden decor, including planters, stepping stones, message stakes, totems, water basins and a garden bench. The soft neutral coloring sets the stage and foundation for the splashy display of living, blooming flowers and plants. The color palette pits oranges against their complement blues with accents of white, green and yellow.

All senses will be brought into play: the sound of birds and bubbling water, the sight of brilliant play of color against neutrals, the interesting textures of both plants and hardscape, and the aroma of flowers and herbs. One can even satisfy the sense of taste by a snitch of fresh lettuce, chives and basil.

A variety of textures and colors enhance the look of the landscape along the natural stone wall in the backyard. The new landscape is visible from both the dining room and kitchen and highlights the statue along the stone wall. Native plants to this area help ensure the livelihood of the new landscape area. Not yet planted at press time, the selection of plants is represented in the above images.

Backyard Pond and Landscape

The existing bird bath and roses are the key elements of this small space. Guests will note that the birds are the main purveyor of this spot. With additional splashes of color, this area comes to life.

The water feature is also a nice touch to any landscape. While strolling through the backyard, the water feature creates a sense of refreshing calmness and peaceful serenity amid some of Kansas City’s most historic and urbanized districts.

French Country Front Façade

7014 NW Kerns Drive, Parkville, Mo.  l  816.505.0444

This home inspires a French Country manor theme in the heart of the city. Large, mature trees provide for an excellent rustic shade garden. Lush evergreen and foliage are planted alongside vibrant, naturally coordinated blooms. Seasonal pot plantings enhance color. Stone edging and dark-dyed mulch complement the home’s classical architecture. Finally, outdoor lighting adds soft illumination to the ambiance of the landscape.
