A local high-powered couple deals with enough chaotic imagery during the day that when they come home in the evening, it’s time to find quietude and visual simplicity. They get that now with a creative contemporary addition to their home, designed by Clockwork Architecture + Design, a firm that was honored with the International Interior Design Association’s (IIDA) Mid America Design Award for its work on the project. Judges based the score on originality, successful implementation of the design statement, use of color, materials, light and the overall design solution.

Clockwork added a new wing to the existing living room, consisting of a bedroom, bath and closet, as well as a fitness room and covered terrace. View corridors through the space connecting the living space with the backyard can be obscured with oversized frameless, etched glass sliding doors, allowing natural light to flood inside while still maintaining a level of privacy.

Built-ins make efficient storage in the bedroom, and a partition wall makes itself useful on both sides — one side supporting the bed’s headrest and the other for the vanity with two sinks and more storage.

Natural materials introduce color and texture instead of relying solely on artificial pigments. The tub
surround, looking like a piece of vintage modern furniture, is made of teak certified by the Forest Stewardship Council. An appealing contrast to the wood slats, the tumbled marble mosaic tile that envelops the shower and tub base has an almost velvety hand. The linen-like floor tiles are laid over a radiant floor for warming comfort.

Another sliding glass door from the bathroom opens to the fitness room, outfitted with a brightly painted blue wall and flat-screen TVs in front of the workout machines.

Outside, the covered terrace features the ceiling and floor clad in eco-friendly red mangaris, which is an extremely hard, tight and interlocked grain wood with an extremely consistent color and the richness of mahogany. Bertoia wire chairs continue the homeowner’s preference for modern furnishings seen inside.

This harmonious retreat demonstrates a thoughtful design process for each element and shows respect for both the client and the environment.

Going Back for Seconds

Believe it or not, this project is a renovation and addition to a formerly traditional Tudor-style home. And it’s not the first time this home has won an award; it received KCH&G’s Grand Award in our first annual Remodel of the Year competition in 2004. Creating an entirely new contemporary image, 360 Architecture transformed the home by using unconventional materials. Waterboard, typically an exterior material, was used for floors. Finished and ash plywood was used for ceilings, steel for the fireplace and sanded commercial metal for the entry. The exterior features red wood lap siding and stucco, partially painted fire-engine red.

Vaulted ceilings reach 18 feet in the main living area, while a curved soffit roof caps the kitchen, featuring floating cabinets, a stainless steel worktop and bluestone island top.
Consistent from interior to exterior, the style is as functional as it is innovative, reflecting the outlook and attitude of its owners.
